General description of the collection: Henry G. Mathewson papers include general officer's papers consisting of miscellaneous official and personal papers regarding assignments to duty, transfers, promotions, summaries of service covering his career (1895-1939). Contains his diary (April 18-May 6, 1906) covering his service as major of the 1st California National Guard during the San Francisco earthquake, plus orders from the War Dept. Militia Bureau, the Western Dept., and the coast defenses of San Francisco while commanding the 40th Coast Artillery during WWI. Also includes a recommendation for promotion from Hunter Liggett in 1928.
